Pretty oval portrait presumed at the age of 8 or 9 of Princess Louise Marie Thérèse Stuart, daughter of the King of England and Ireland Jacob II and of Scotland (1633-1701 Saint-Germain en laye) and Marie of Modena (1673-1701), born and died in Saint-Germain en laye 1692+1712. Portrait that could be attributed to the entourage of the court portrait painter of Louis and their daughter Louise Marie Thérèse.
In the portraits of the queen with the young princess painted by Alexis S. Belle we find the identical lace dress present here with its silk panels as well as the associated Fontange hairstyle. In this portrait, the princess holds, surrounding her with her right arm, her little dog King-Charles installed at her height on an entablature. The king and queen having died of smallpox in 1701, Alexis S. Belle left the court of Saint-Germain shortly after. Jacob II Catholic king, descendant of Mary Stuart and Charles I, took refuge in France in 1689 with his family and his court, having failed to stay in power and regain it twice, placed himself under the protection of his ally and cousin Louis XIV at the Château de Saint-Germain en laye; the English Protestant parliamentarians having rejected the Catholic religion and the risk of absolute power, had as a consequence and to protect themselves from any invasion by France, requested military aid from the Dutch Protestants who sent an army in response; They then considered to secure the kingdom to place on the throne of England, Ireland and Scotland the Protestant prince William of Orange called William III. French school portrait in perfect condition, very old recanvassed.
Louis XIV frame from the end of the 17th century, carved gilded in very good condition.
Painting bearing an original numbered collection label on the back.
