"Copper Medallion: Minerva Presenting The Allegory Of Liberal Arts Painting."
Copper medallion: Minerva presenting the allegory of Liberal Arts Painting.

Germany (?), 19th century. Copper electrotype.

There is a bronze casting proof from the beginning of the 17th century attributed to Hans Jacob Bayr (1574-1628) and kept at the National Gallery of Art in Washington (inv.: 992.55.18). This medallion is inspired by a burin of Aegidius Sadeler II (1552 - 1615) executed after an oil on copper attributed to Hans van Aachen. A copy in gilded copper was in the Hubert de Givenchy collection (C. de Nicolay-Mazery, “The elegance of Hubert de Givenchy” in Private houses of France: living with history, Paris, 2014, p. 183 (ill.) ). It was sold during its sale on June 17, 2022 at Christie's, (lot no. 319).
