Reliquary Guardian Statue Mbumba-bwete Kota, Sangu - Gabon flag

Object description :

"Reliquary Guardian Statue Mbumba-bwete Kota, Sangu - Gabon "
This type of statue guardian of a reliquary basket called mbumba-bwete is quite rare, it comes from the Sangu region, in the west of Kota territory, central Gabon. The body is symbolized by a diamond extended by a long neck on which the miniature head sits, everything is summarized, minimalist as we would say today and all the more powerful. The bottom is less worn because it was sheltered in the basket or the duffel containing a few bones, only the neck and the head protruded, surveying the surroundings (see last photo from Christies). Total height with base 34 cm and 28 without.
This fetish comes from the gallery of the historian Richard Dams in Belgium.
