Charles XV King of Sweden and Norway - Nordic landscape - Carl Ludvig Eugén Bernadotte - 1844
Charles, the crown prince, served briefly as viceroy of Norway in 1856 and 1857. During his childhood, he was placed in the care of Countess Christina Ulrika Taube, the royal governess.[1] Son of Josephine of Leuchtenberg, he was a descendant of King Gustav I of Sweden and sister of King Charles.
Heir prince
His grandfather, Charles XIV, suffered a stroke on his 81st birthday in 1844 and died shortly afterwards. His only son succeeded him as Oscar I. After his father's accession to the throne, young Charles was appointed chancellor of the universities of Uppsala and Lund and, in 1853, chancellor of the Royal Academy of Fine Arts. -arts, on February 11, 1846, was named honorary member. from the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.
On June 19, 1850, Charles married Princess Louise of the Netherlands in Stockholm, granddaughter of William II of the Netherlands on his father's side and granddaughter of William I of Prussia on his mother's side.
Luisa was a cultured and refined woman, but she was considered rather normal and Carlo was disappointed by her appearance. Luisa was in love with her husband, while he preferred other women, which saddened her deeply. Among his famous lovers were the actress Laura Bergnéhr, Countess Joséphine Sparre, Wilhelmine Schröder and the actresses Hanna Styrell and Elise Hwasser. On the other hand, the relationship with his only daughter, Luisa, is solid.
There are many rumors that Charles had many illegitimate children.[3]
King of Sweden and Norway
As crown prince, his brusque and unconventional manner caused many people to worry about his future ascension to the throne, although Charles later proved to be one of the most popular Scandinavian kings and one of the most constitutional kings. His reign became famous for its reforms: the municipal law (1862), the ecclesiastical law (1863) and the penal law (1864) were approved precisely at the request of the king, whose motto was: "Land skall med lag byggas" ( with the law the State will be built).
Charles was an ardent defender of the Scandinavian cause and the policy of solidarity between the three northern kingdoms; his strong friendship with King Frederick VII of Denmark led him to pledge his support for Denmark on the eve of the war of 1864, which was in some ways unjustifiable. However, due to the unpreparedness of the Swedish army and the difficult situation, Charles was forced to declare himself neutral.
The king died in Malmö on September 18, 1872[4].
Like his father and grandfather, he was a Freemason and Grand Master of Swedish Freemasonry[5].
Charles XV was an esteemed painter and his poems reveal his writing ability. His brother Oscar II succeeds him on the throne of Norway and Sweden.
