Roland Lefranc 1931-2000 (navy painter) Our painters Of Norman origin, born in 1931 in Calvados in Carcagny, to a merchant father who ran the village café-grocery store there and a mother who was a teacher, Roland Lefranc remained very attached to his native region. It is also established in an old ecclesial residence in Saint-Vigor-le-Grand, near Bayeux. After having been a student at the Ecole Normale d'Instructeurs de Caen, while following courses at the Ecole des Beaux-Arts, he completed twenty-seven months of his military service in Algeria, where he devoted his time free to paint. First a teacher, always passionate about painting and learning engraving with the great artist Raphaël Manchon, from 1960, he exhibited more and more in Normandy, Brittany, Sicily, and Paris, and found himself encouraged by numerous regional and national awards. In 1970, he won the friendship of Pierre Imbourg who directed "l'amateur d'Art" and dedicated a book to him. From 1975, he exhibited regularly at the Salon des Peintres Témoins de notre temps and participated in numerous group exhibitions. His reputation as a post-impressionist landscaper, whose bold style, richly colored by the borders of France, appealed to the Swiss, the Japanese and the British in particular. He began to travel to Switzerland, Holland, Morocco, Spain, Italy, then Peru, Bolivia, Russia... not without tirelessly rediscovering the sources of his naturalist inspiration in his region of Lower Normandy. News 2007: The article from Normandie Magazine, n°212, on the occasion of the exhibition at the Hôtel de Bourgtheroulde (Rouen) News 2003: The article by Patrice de la Perrière on the occasion of the exhibition from Condé-Sur-Noireau on Roland Lefranc. New on the site, "My Normandy and my travels", a documentary on the work of Roland Lefranc Comments and production by Patrice Anquetil, editing and mixing Jean-Claude Maury, duration 26 minutes "Let painting first be a celebration for the eye!”, considered Delacroix or Manet, I don’t remember. Besides, every painter should be able to say it. No impressionist did without it. And I know that Lefranc, without formally giving the instructions, is happy to sit at his easel to let his brushes take him on this pleasure boating that is painting on canvases which become sails, jibs, laughs. It is good, however, for a ship to have two anchors, advises the proverb; let it also have strong stays! There is no shortage of paintings by our painter.
