Nitkowski, Stani (1949-2001) Son of a seamstress and a Polish emigrant, Stani Nitkowski was born on May 29, 1949 in La Pouëze. He has four brothers and sisters, two of whom died at a young age. Affected by a progressive illness, he undertook studies by correspondence. In 1968, he moved to Paris where he worked as a bank employee. He returned to his native region shortly after, where he worked at Crédit Agricole then became a notary clerk and employee of Emmaüs. As his illness progressed, he returned to his parents at the age of twenty-two. In 1973, he began painting and attended a community reception center. Married in 1974 and father of one child, he built a house in Saint-Georges-sur-Loire where he settled in 1976. His meeting with Robert Tatin was a major event and he abandoned “gestural abstraction” to a more figurative work. He exhibited for the first time at La Frênouse in 1980 then at the Galerie l'Oeil de Bœuf in Paris in 1982. He then worked with the Vanuxem gallery. His paintings, painful, are characterized by a visionary expressionism and the portraits seem frightening apparitions. This living soul also draws with pen and Indian ink on the paper which he scratches and splashes. Stani Nitkowski also participates in various editions of works with Hervé Aussant, Jacques Karamanoukian and Doctor Pierre Dukan. In 1993, his work was the subject of a major retrospective at the Musée du Pilori in Niort. He also presented, during an event on Antonin Artaud which took place in Montreal, a work entitled “Artaud with the crown of thorns”. Stani Nitkowski lived in Angers during the last years of his life. He died shortly after the death of his son, in April 2001.
