This is therefore a magnificent expressionist composition with a fauve tendency by Lazare Levy who paints here a scene of port with boats, pier, lighthouse, maybe Honfleur? As usual, the painter uses an excessively powerful touch and very rich in material, in an equally very usual palette made of tones of Sienna, gray, white, blue, yellow with subtle little touches of red. Typical work of this excellent Jewish painter, renowned for his orientalist scenes, most of them painted in Tunisia; it would also be surprising if he did not rub shoulders with Alexandre Roubtzoff who also painted there at the same time. LEVY Lazar, also known as Lazare-Levy, was born in 1867 in Odratzheim in Alsace, painter of animated, marine and especially orientalist compositions. He painted Parisian scenes which he exhibited in various Parisian Salons. He participated in the colonial exhibitions of 1922 and 1931 where he mainly exhibited views of souks, oases and Tunisian landscapes. Excellent painter at the mid-range, despite nice peaks around €2500, the price of his works is still surprisingly affordable given the quality of his painting, this may not last because several galleries are interested in his work.
