Léon Girardet was born into a family of artists of Swiss Huguenot origin. His grandfather Charles was an engraver and his father Paul a painter, just like his two brothers Jules and Eugène. A student of Alexandre Cabanel, he is a member of the Society of French Artists in Paris and of the Society of Friends of the Arts in Neuchâtel (city of his paternal family). At the Salon, between 1884 and 1895, he exhibited numerous watercolors whose titles refer to troubadour iconography, just like the present sheet.
