Pewter Wine Pitcher (zinn), Switzerland, 18th Century flag

Object description :

"Pewter Wine Pitcher (zinn), Switzerland, 18th Century"

Pewter truncated conical PICHET, quarter-round goblet and tasseled thumbscrew. Obtained in longitudinal cast iron.
Hallmark with the city's coat of arms and interior countermark with the lily.
Height: 22.7 cm.
VALAIS, first half of the 18th century.

This lily countermark is found at the bottom of pitchers bearing SIMAVAL and STORNO hallmarks which probably borrowed the mold from its unidentified creator, unless the latter was one of these two masters.

Longitudinal cast iron?
Until the end of the 17th century in important production centers and later in others, longitudinal casting (also called "shell casting") was practiced, which consisted of melting the pitchers into two "shells" in the direction of height then brought together by welding. The latter is very generally visible inside. The hole left by the axis of the core was then blocked by a welded pad, often visible inside and sometimes bearing the stamp of the creator of the mold. Note the similarity in truncated cone shape with the pitchers from Lyon and Auvergne, which constitutes a linear geographic East-West sequence.
A few scattered scratches and a consolidation of the upper attachment of the handle
