"Pair Of Antique Klismos Chairs In Mahogany And Silk, Consulate Period, De Chapuis Stamp"
Rare pair of antique-style chairs in mahogany, mahogany veneer, banded back and crossed grille simulating wrought iron, front and rear legs curved in Etruscan style. Our so-called Klismos chairs are a sophisticated production produced with an archaeological desire for a true return to antiquity. Consulate period, around 1800. Our two chairs bear the Chapuis stamp behind the belt. Jean-Joseph Chapuis was born in Brussels in 1765 and died there in 1864. He was trained in the workshop of Georges Jacob in Paris where he obtained a master's degree, which allowed him to use a stamp. He had set up his workshop in his hometown around 1795 and kept it in operation until 1830. There he designed numerous pieces of furniture with combinations and mechanisms for the Court, hence his name as a mechanical cabinetmaker. His furniture is today exhibited in Brussels in the royal museums of art and history and the Charlier museum in Saint-Josse-ten-Noode. These beautiful chairs dating from the beginning of his activity, in the years 1795-1800, it is interesting to note that they are still very inspired by Jacob's style: this back motif simulating crisscrossed ironwork is found on Jacob's chairs, so much so that one might have thought these chairs came from his workshop if Chapuis' stamps did not appear on the back. Beautiful amateur and collector's items, with very beautiful finishes: buffer varnish, knife blade trim, tomato red (or dark coral) colored silk toile cover, superior quality silk which is characterized by its great solidity (silk weaving is much denser per cm² than satin or damask) and finally piping braids made from the same fabric. Excellent condition, old restorations on file. We had the varnish redone with a pad and the horsehair trim on the strap was redone, stitched with a knife blade and trimmed anew. Seat width: 46cm Seat height: 41cm Back height: 89.5cm
