“Fisherman at Vallon des Auffes”

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,

Beautiful luminous work by the Marseille painter Louis Audibert which represents a view of the Vallon des Auffes bridge in Marseille animated by a fisherman in his boat.
The artist creates a luminous composition, with contrasts and harmony of colors between the sea water, the fishermen's boats and the nets spread on the quay.
Vallon des Auffes is a small picturesque fishing port located on the Corniche Kennedy in Marseille.

A student of Alphonse Moutte at the Marseille School of Fine Arts in 1898, Louis Audibert went to Paris for the Universal Exhibition of 1900 and discovered the work of the Impressionists and Cézanne. After completing his military service in Toulon in 1906, he returned to live in Paris before settling permanently in Marseille.
From this date, he exhibited still lifes and views of Marseille and its surroundings at the Salon des Indépendants and the Salon d'Automne. He also frequents exhibitions of Marseille artists and the city's galleries.
He claims the founding of the Allauch academy with his painter friends: Louis Mathieu Verdilhan, Alfred Lombard and L'abbee Cabasson.

After the First World War, he had his first personal exhibition at the Hôtel du Louvre et la Paix, on the Cannebière. He also created decorative sets in Marseille for the opera house and the courthouse annex, and also for the Pavillon de Provence at the Paris International Exhibition in 1937.
In 1948, he founded and chaired the Union of visual arts which allows the confrontation of the works of local and national artists. He also became an illustrator and author of an album of drawings on Marseille.
In 1975, a major exhibition "Audibert and his friends" was organized at the Palais Longchamp.

Louis Audibert became Winston Churchill's teacher and became friends with many artists such as Albert Marquet, Moise Kisling, Marcel Leprin...
His works are today preserved in particular in museums in Marseille and Cassis.
