“In the Estérel”

Oil on canvas,
Signed lower right,

Beautiful work from the divisionism period of the painter Serge Mendjisky which represents a seaside in the Estérel, most certainly in the Trayas in Agay. The artist uses a palette of vibrant colors to transcribe the light of a summer day on the shores of the Mediterranean.
The technique of divisionism and the structure of his composition gives a 3D dimension to his work.

This work is part of the artist's most sought-after period: divisionism. The artist prefers the word divisionism to the word pointillism because the latter is likened to a technique with a spirit. He describes divisionism as "the division of color, then its reconstitution on a canvas must make it possible to bring there the phenomenon of the vibration of color in its volume of air."
For the artist, light is something that cannot be reproduced but must be represented by something else, by color...

The painter André Dunoyer de Segonzac, who met the painter Paul Signac in 1908, declared "to see the rebirth of the 'Neo-Impressionist School with a gifted young painter (Serge Mendjisky) whose personal talent rediscovers the Art of Divisionism and revives its tradition.'

Born in 1929 in Paris, Serge Mendjisky became acquainted with the world of Art from his childhood, thanks to his father who was a painter at the School of Paris. From his childhood, he rubbed shoulders with the painters Kisling, Foujita, Soutine, Derain, Kikoin, Dunoyer de Segonzac and Picasso.

The Second World War marked a turning point in the artist's life, his mother was arrested, his father joined the resistance, his older brother was shot in 1942, Serge Mendjisky found himself alone in Paris left to his own devices. In order to support himself, he worked as a longshoreman at Bercy station, which involved himself in the resistance.
Serge Mendjisky is an accomplished artist: painter, sculptor, photographer, mosaicist...

For 40 years, the artist devoted himself to Divisionism painting before turning in the early 2000s to macro photography to revisit the codes of Pop Art.

It gives photography a pictorial dimension. An internationally recognized artist, he exhibits in Europe, Japan and the United States.

This work took place in the archives of Patricia Mendjisky, wife of the artist.
