"Aubusson Tapestry From Entre Deux. Mythological Scene. Louis XIV Period. End Of The 17th Century. "
Admirable Aubusson tapestry of two beautiful dimensions. Rectangular border of flowers. The singularity of the object can be read in this phantasmagorical decor with a "Greek" atmosphere: Dionysus, "wild" god of drunkenness and vegetation, holding a bunch of grapes, his tutelary fruit. It is rare to see him represented as a "child" in the style of an Italian putto. Rarer is the representation of his mother, the mortal Semele, princess of Boeotia. With her protective gaze, she watches over the child. Finally, the panther (or tiger), emblematic animal present in the Dionysian procession (with the bacchantes, not represented here) is ridden by the child god. In Delos, the Greek "Pompeii" of the Cyclades, a similar representation of the god is known on a mosaic (opus vermiculatum) of the "House of Dionysus", remains of the 1st century BC, proof of the great culture of the sponsor of the piece under Louis XIV. Our tapestry is in very good condition. It is lined at the back and has three rings to hang it on the wall. Shimmering colors and very unique subject. End of the 17th century or very beginning of the 18th century.
