"Commode Peinte Aux Caryatides Dite "de Chambre " Dans Le Goût Pompéien. Italie Vers 1820."
Important and unusual Italian "bedroom chest of drawers" in the Pompeian taste. Around 1810/1820. Tall unit furnished with three large drawers whose fronts and sides are lacquered and painted in pleasant shades of blue-green and Pompeian patterns. This is a "fine" example of production whose objective was then to recapture an Italian-French taste for propaganda purposes... The progressive and liberal elites of the "sister republics" of France (Ligurian, cisalpine, parthenopean...) founded under the Directory (1795-1799) "accepted" the ideals of the French Revolution, under the influence of Bonaparte. Decorated with scrolls and palmettes on the jambs. The top itself is painted and covered in the manner of an entablature by two elegant heads of Greek caryatids (antique taste) covered with gold leaf. A few small paint chips in places and need to be repaired. Four “Roman-style” gilded spinning top legs complete the finish of this admirable piece of furniture. The whole thing is very decorative. tray width 124 cm Furniture height 126 cm Height of each drawer: 20 cm Furniture depth 40 cm plate thickness 5 cm up to the caryatids
