Statuette - Dogon Culture, Mali - First Half Of The 20th Century

Statuette with a body entirely incised with horizontal striations, seated on a domed circular base, her hands resting on her shins, her wrists and arms adorned with bracelets, her conical chest drooping. She is wearing a necklace with a pendant around her neck.
She could be a hermaphrodite representation of the cosmology of the Dogon culture, where Amma, the creator god, united with the female earth to create the primordial ancestor, the progenitor of humanity: the Nommo.
