Katar Rajpute, India Early 18th
For Westerners, the katar is the most typical dagger of India, and it is true that its particular handle is only found in this country.
This one comes from the North West of India, in the region formerly called Rajputana, which approximately corresponds to current Rajahstan. It is particular because of its age, before the 19th century, probably 1st half of the 18th century, and the type of its handle.
The BLADE is double-edged, with a straight diamond section, with a chiseled pattern at the base of the blade and 4 fullers on each side, which meet at the central edge. The point marks a strong thickening intended to pierce the mesh ribs.
Length of the blade = 20 cm, width at the guard 5.5 cm, thickness near the guard 3.4 mm, thickness at the tip 8mm
HILT : It is forged in one piece with the blade. Its particularity is at the level of the hand grip, which instead of the usual 2 spools, is made up of 4 tapered crosspieces whose ends cross the branches and are riveted to them in diamond points. This type of grip is much rarer than the usual form and generally corresponds to a quality weapon.
The width of the handle is also quite unusual, since unlike many katars, designed for small hands, it is possible for a Westerner to slip their hand inside. Handle width 8.5 cm
This katar has a nice patina of age, with of course oxidation clearly visible in the photos, which I chose not to clean.
