Renowned for its beauty and one of the most important gods of Olympus, Apollo is also associated with various themes such as music, poetry, art, archery, medicine and the sun.
Apollo’s gifts and powers are many. He is at the same time the god of arts, music, singing, male beauty, light and poetry. He is also the god of healing and purification. He is also endowed with divination powers. As such, his oracles, rendered by the Pythia of Delphi (the oracle of the temple of Apollo located in this city), are frequently consulted. As it symbolizes beauty in all its forms, reason, but also order, this solar god played a considerable role in the Greek cult and the development of the lifestyle of the city.

The Greek god is represented here with his lyre. According to legend, the lyre is an instrument that was invented by Hermes. This son of Zeus had stolen 50 oxen from his half-brother Apollo. When the latter found the thief, he showed him his anger. To calm him down, Hermes played him music with his lyre and then offered him the instrument as a gift.
Apollo, conquered by this musical instrument, then used it to delight the gods of Olympus with its wonderful songs by accompanying them with a sweet melody.

It is also said that Apollo’s lyre allows him to bring happiness to men, like what he does to the gods: it symbolizes the generous side of the god of singing, bringing relief and distancing distress.
It also bears the crown of Laurier. Laurel is the symbol of Apollo. According to Ovid, Daphne, nymph of Greek mythology, who was the first love of Apollo, fled him and would, after a long pursuit, be caught, when, at the last moment, her father, the river god Peneée, transformed her into laurel. From then on, Apollo made his tree and dedicated it to triumphs, songs and poems.
