An oak relief – ca. 1510/1520 – South Netherlandish (possibly Antwerp or Brabant).

Very refined wooden sculpture with 3 soldiers and 1 figure.
Beautiful and dynamic composition.
Original oak relief with very few restorations in excellent condition.
Very detailed clothing (for example, very refined chain mail).

Presumably a scene from a saint's life or descent from the cross.

Very exceptionally, one of the soldiers wears a kind of hat with a carnevalesque head depicted on it (crook's throne?), barely visible to the viewer but very beautifully elaborated and almost hidden. A technical feat to be able to sculpt this face in such a difficult place.

This altar piece was part of a larger whole.
With later velvet covered stand.

Provenance: Private collection - Belgium -  for 3 generations
