"Superb Plaster Deer Head From The Black Forest Circa 1900"
Superb plaster deer head from the Black Forest circa 1900Lovely Black Forest deer head in wood and plaster. Handcrafted in the folk art style circa 1900. It features a real deer horn trophy. A stunning individual piece that enhances any wall decor. Good condition with some abbreviations and partial paint restorations.
A special way of presenting hunting trophies is to attach them to carved animal heads. This tradition has existed since the Middle Ages. Even after intensive research, it is not yet possible to explain exactly how this happened. The sculpted heads are often colored and mounted on cartridges that are also sculpted and painted. They follow a naturalistic representation and we can think that they are thus symbolically brought back to life from the abstraction of dead wood. The best known artists are Madl in Ichenhausen, Germany, and Heissl in Ebensee, Austria. Around 1900, the antler collection at Arco-Zinneberg Palace was an example for any lover of this art.
