Object description :

"Grande Poupée Ham Pilu, Fali, Cameroun"

Large doll made of a phallic-shaped wooden structure. She is covered in glass beads all over her body. The head is covered with string hair ending in a small blue bead. A bun at the top is represented by a white pearl and an old George V one penny coin (BRITISH WEST AFRICA). The legs and arms are made of cowrie shells, beads and a coin. The statue wears a wrought iron bell at neck level. A brass, copper and iron sex cover is placed at the front of the statue, while on its right it carries a piece of leather representing a bag. It is interesting to see that the sex cover is a feminine attribute and that the bag is a masculine attribute among the Fali. This statue is called "Ham pilu" (wooden child) like the small fertility statues which have the same shape. This large one was offered for a couple's engagement. She was to ensure beautiful descendants (boys and girls), the removal of evil spirits and fortune. In short, a bright future for the future bride and groom!
It is a much more complex statue than it appears at first glance. Its symbolism is very rich and it is a beautiful cultural testimony to this region of Africa.
Dense wood with patina of use, glass beads, iron, leather, strings, brass, copper, cowrie shells and coins.
