Mahogany Buffet, Louis XVI Style – Mid-19th Century

This solid and veneered mahogany piece of furniture, made in Paris, includes a front drawer with miter-cut mahogany strips. It is decorated on the inside with a chiseled bronze rod and a large frieze composed of volute scrolls and an entrance in the center. This drawer is equipped with a functional original lock with its key. Below, the crossbar as well as the “S” shaped sides are highlighted with a scalloped and chiseled half-round baguette. This sideboard also opens with two doors, with perimeter bands assembled with a miter cut, decorated on the inside by a scalloped bronze strip. These doors open with a key, with an authentic working top/bottom lock, accompanied by its oval bronze entrance with foliage motifs. A half-round and square brass joint cover is adjacent to the right door. The lower crosspiece and the sides are adorned with a bronze rosary. On each side, in reserve, this piece of furniture has two solid mahogany columns with fixed grooves and top and bottom collars. The whole rests on four spindle feet with rings and sabots. The oak veneer interior offers a shelf on cleats. The “S” or moving sides each offer a drawer that pivots forward. The latter has the same characteristics as the facade. The top, dressed in white Carrara marble that follows the lines, is surrounded by an openwork brass gallery with a slight return. Note that the back, frame and bottom are made of oak.
