The only historical atlas of this important scientific expedition. Produced by Messrs. Lesueur and Petit, Part 1 (350 x 253 mm) accompanying the account of the voyage of discovery to the austral lands from 1800-1804 published by François Péron and Louis de Freycinet from 1807 to 1816.
Vol. plates: (6) pp. + 40 plates on strong paper with serpente (2 doubles, 38 and 39 engraved by Pillement), 23 finely colored in the period with brush (Plan of Sydney, views of the coasts, dwellings, weapons, views, scenes, natural history and many portraits of inhabitants of Australia, Tasmania and the Timor archipelago...). Plates 16-24-32-37-38-39 were etched by Pillement. Many of the plates depict the most extraordinary species that Europeans were seeing for the first time (wombats, cassowaries, kangaroos, etc.).
There is some foxing on several pages or in the margins, which has spared the vast majority of plates; not missing.
This atlas relates the mythical voyage whose account, begun by Péron, who died in 1810 before the second part was published in 1816, had to be completed by his second-in-command, Commandant Louis Freycinet.
It contains an engraved title page adorned with a rotunda etching by Lesueur.
