Doublement — a construction of interlocking diagonal bars in chrome-plated brass which, through their double crossing, generate a three-dimensional form of apparent complexity concealing rigorous mathematical logic — is one of Max Bill's most characteristic multiple works: sculpture as the plastic demonstration of a mathematical principle, here the doubling of an angle, made sensible through material and space. The chrome reflects the surrounding environment in its polished surfaces, multiplying viewpoints and drawing the viewer into the work — a property that Max Bill, deeply influenced by the Bauhaus tradition and by the sculpture of Naum Gabo, exploited with consummate mastery.
The Editions Denise René gallery in Paris — founded in 1944 by Denise René, the first European gallery entirely dedicated to geometric and kinetic abstract art — published this multiple in 1969, in the context of the great wave of art editions of the 1960s–1970s aimed at making original works accessible to a broader collector public. The Denise René edition of Doublement is today documented in the world's greatest museum collections.
