Jean Jules Louis Cavaillès was born in Carmaux on June 20, 1901 into a family of traders. He entered the Carmaux Mines as a draftsman from 1919 to 1921. He then decided to devote himself to painting and left in 1921 to settle in Paris where he became friends with the painter Roger Limouse (1894-1990) with whom he shares the workshop. From 1922 to 1925, he studied at the Académie Julian, under the direction of Jean-Paul Laurens' two sons, Pierre and Paul-Albert Laurens. During these years when he sought to develop his own style, Cavaillès regularly visited the Louvre to draw inspiration from the work of the masters. He also frequents the galleries and salons of Automne and Independents where he discovers the most contemporary approaches. His interest then focused particularly on the research of Braque and Matisse who revealed to him the chromatic intensity of Fauvism, but also of Bonnard and Renoir, who bequeathed him their lesson of tenderness towards beings and things. In 1936, winning the Blumenthal Foundation Prize helped to attract the attention of the general public to the work of the young artist. From 1937, he was asked to create a large decoration for the Languedoc pavilion at the International Exhibition. In 1938, he was appointed professor at the National School of Decorative Arts. Moment when he met Raymond Legueult (1898-1971), Roland Oudot (1897-1981) and Maurice Brianchon (1899-1979), his friends and painters of the Poetic Reality movement. During the war, he actively participated in the resistance with his friend Jean Cassou. Upon liberation, he was appointed curator of the Musée des Augustins in Toulouse until he was reinstated to his teaching position in Paris. From 1946 to his death, Cavaillès continued his personal work in his Parisian workshop, in his property in Tonnerre or his apartment in Cagnes. Painter of atmosphere and happy times, Cavaillès mainly paints landscapes, still lifes and interior scenes with windows open to the sea or garden.
