"Monk Santibelli 19th Century"
Rare Santibelli from the 19th century representing a monk. The santibèlli are very close to the santons, these objects of domestic religiosity are very popular among the Provençals. The word santibèlli comes from the Italian “beautiful saints”. Originally, santibèlli are a kind of Saint-Sulpician-style statuette sold in the streets of Marseille by Italian peddlers. Let's not forget that Marseille experienced strong Italian immigration until the 20th century. According to specialists, one of the first manufacturers of santibèlli could be Pierre-Nicolas Santouchy (originally Santucci). The latter presented on a triangular base is dressed in a cape and carries a book in his left hand. Excellent general condition throughout.
