"Miniature On Copper, Attributed To Cornelis De Bailleur, 17th Century"
Polychrome miniature on copper, depicting the episode of the Three Wise Men, recorded in the Gospel according to Matthew. Having learned of the birth of the infant Jesus, the Magi - Melchior, Gaspard and Balthazar - travel to Bethlehem to celebrate. Guided by the Star of Bethlehem, they come from many countries of the East, laden with packages. They carry rich gifts for the newborn: myrrh, gold and frankincense. The miniature on the right depicts Mary, Joseph and baby Jesus. They are haloed, a sign of their sanctity. On the left are the Magi and a crowd of onlookers. The Star of Bethlehem still shines in the sky. The scene takes place in the early hours of the morning, a symbol of purity and future promise.
The painting is not fixed in the frame. Two screws and the metal elements holding the back of the frame are missing (see photo). Carved and gilded wood frame. The miniature is attributed to the painter Cornelis de Bailleur from the southern Netherlands, baptized in Antwerp on February 5, 1607 and died in the same city on July 26, 1671.
