This funerary stele comes from the Sulu Archipelago. This archipelago is located in the southern Philippines between Mindanao and Borneo, south of the Sulu Sea. Funerary stelae are made of stone, wood, or coral. The Sunduk guide souls to their afterlife and ensure their memory. This is a female Sunduk made of hardwood, with a central round motif, composed of scrolls and incised plant motifs. White pigments. Late 19th century.
