Pier Antonio GARIAZZO is an Italian painter born in 1879 and died in 1963. Son of a rich landowner, he obtained his diploma in medicine and surgery in 1902 with a thesis on neurosis in relation to the marvelous. He only practiced medicine during the Great War. Gariazzo then completely neglected medical sciences to devote himself to painting, engraving and etching, a vocation since a young age. He then moved to Rome (where he had been a student of Domenico Bruschi and Francesco Vitalini), Belgium, before returning to Turin where he studied under Giacomo Grosso. He made his debut in Turin at the Promoter in 1899 and participated from 1902 to 1908 in the quadrennial exhibitions in Turin. In his activity as a painter, he created a series of portraits describing naturalistic landscapes (inspired by the countryside of Piedmont and Lazio), as well as numerous Belle Époque portraits using mixed charcoal and engraving techniques. Among these was a 1907 portrait dedicated to writer friend Amalia Guglielminetti. At the same time, he approached cinematography, first as an artistic collaborator at Itala Film, then as founder of his own production company, Savoia Film (1911). As a film producer, he directed several films, some of which were successful under the title In hoc signo vinces of 1913, and was also an artistic director, director and screenwriter. In 1916, he left Savoia Film and collaborated with Pasquali Film, Gloria Films and Vay Film. He then went to Germany where in 1924 he made his last film called Salvation with Diana Karenne. He wrote books including La stampa incisa (1907) and Il teatro muto (1918). He resumed his work as a painter and organized various personal exhibitions in Paris, Berlin, London and Brussels. in Milan in 1939; in Turin in 1940; in Rome, Milan and Cremona in 1941. In 1950 he presented a series of interpretive paintings of music in Turin, notably Rachmaninof's Preludio in Do sharp.
