David Sharp was born in 1932 in Hackney, east London. At the age of 8 he was discovered to have a talent for art. After these studies, he enrolled in basic courses for 2 years at the Maidstone School of Art. During his summer holidays, he visited the charming little town of Rye where he discovered rye pottery and it was there that his interest in ceramics was born. In 1947 he became Rye Pottery's first apprentice. He worked there for 6 years before being called to serve his country in the army. In 1956 he returned, worked and trained for Rye art pottery which became Cinque Port Potter.
