"Youssef Kamel (1890-1971) Egyptian Painter - Roma 1927"
Youssef KAMEL (1890-1971)Biography :
Among the first students to join the Cairo School of Fine Arts in 1908, Youssef Kamel was part of a generation of Egyptian modernist artists often called the Al-Ruwwad Group (The Group Pioneers). He studied under Italian painter Paolo Forcella and worked alongside influential Egyptian artists such as Ragheb Ayad and Mahmoud Mokhtar. In 1925, Kamel received a scholarship to attend the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Rome. He studied under Umberto Coromaldi who, like Forcella, followed the 19th-century Italian Macchiaioli movement, which focused on oil painting techniques highlighting spots of light in nature. Kamel transfers this attention to light and color through soft brushstrokes in his landscapes and portraits. He returned to Cairo in 1929 to work as a painting teacher at the School of Fine Arts.
