Rare and typical model characteristic of the achievements of the time of Sultan Abd-ül-Medjid. (1823 -1861)
This splendid Kirsehir-Medjidi presents us with a sumptuous decor on a cherry red background. Wool on wool, double woolen weft, Turkish knot. Dimensions: 102 cm x 157 cm State of use, wear, but good condition collection.
Rare artifact from the Ottoman Empire. The two main colors, red, color of the national flag and green, color of the religious flag of the Prophet.
Note the two mosque lamps suspended in the center of the carpet by chains made up of S. The S are the symbol of God in Christian art, and mainly in the manufacture of carpets among the Armenians.
This piece is therefore not a double Muslim prayer rug, but a Christian prayer rug knotted by an Armenian, which is not uncommon in Transylvania, as well as in the Caucasus.
Having bought this carpet in Hungary, we can admit the hypothesis of Turkish work, the Armenians being the best knotters in this field, for the Hungarian market therefore for a Christian customer, which remains factual.
These rugs then took the name of rugs from Transylvania Admittedly, the years have passed and the colors have faded, but the vigor remains very present, on this piece with a rather rare pedigree.
The heavily ornate border of knots, stylized flowers, and a classic field, denotes the French influence that this sultan wanted to instill in his country. This sultan left his mark on the art of his country and gave a real direction to French art in the middle of the 19th century.
We have a reflection of that era in the design of this piece, a rare rug of its kind.
Dimensions: width: 102 cm ( 40") x length: 157 cm ( 58")
