Bohemian Ruby Crystal And Gilt-bronze Centrepiece, Napoleon III Period An
Bohemian Ruby Crystal and Gilt-Bronze Centrepiece, Napoleon III Period
An impressive presentation bowl or jardinière crafted from ruby-red Bohemian crystal and finely chased gilt bronze.
The deep hemispherical crystal basin is cut throughout with a diamond-point pattern, producing striking reflections and enhancing the intensity of its rich ruby colour. It is set within an elaborate gilt-bronze mount and fitted with a gilt-metal inner liner.
The upper section is encircled by a pierced gallery decorated with scrolling foliage, palmettes and finely modelled female masks in the Classical taste. Two large scrolling handles rise gracefully from either side of the bowl.
The basin is supported by an architectural pedestal richly ornamented with winged griffins, acanthus leaves, garlands and foliate motifs. The shaped base rests on four feet and is centred by an elaborate decorative trophy.
The contrast between the deep ruby crystal and the warm gilding, together with the richness of the sculptural decoration, perfectly reflects the luxurious and eclectic taste of the French Second Empire.
French work combining a gilt-bronze mount with ruby-red Bohemian crystal, Napoleon III period, second half of the 19th century, circa 1870–1880.
