Marie Antoinette With A Rose, Signed David Ivory Miniature, 19th Century
Marie Antoinette with a Rose, Signed David Ivory Miniature, 19th Century
A finely painted portrait miniature on ivory depicting Queen Marie Antoinette, after the celebrated portrait known as “Marie Antoinette with a Rose”, painted in 1783 by Élisabeth Louise Vigée Le Brun and now held in the collection of the Palace of Versailles.
The Queen is portrayed half-length, wearing an elegant blue-grey silk gown edged with delicate lace and adorned with a large pink ribbon. The refined rendering of her features, powdered hairstyle and sumptuous fabrics demonstrates the accomplished execution of this miniature.
Signed “David” in the lower right-hand corner.
The portrait is presented in an elaborate Louis XVI-style gilt-bronze easel frame, finely decorated with foliate friezes, floral garlands and ribbon bows. The frame is surmounted by a ribbon-tied wreath of roses.
