The soumaks are embroideries on kilim They are woven in various regions of Central Asia, in the east of Turkey, in Iran, and in the Caucasus mainly. The word "soumak" certainly comes from the name of the city where they would have been created, "Sjemacha", located in the region of Kuba in the Caucasus.
As flexible and light as the kilims, they are woven and embroidered flat by sedentary, semi-nomadic, nomadic women to decorate their homes and warm their interiors and also as a dowry gift for weddings.
Originally, they made them during the cold and harsh winter of these regions of Central Asia, after the planting and harvesting season had passed. Soumaks are not real carpets but rather a kind of kilim, denser and rougher.
They are not reversible because the pile remains long on the back and are often used as table mats or bedspreads.
Our model, with many symbols, ethnic motifs and stylized birds, remains in very good condition and has beautiful shimmering colors, including rust, see coral, black, green and the sublime curry yellow.
It will delight an amateur, in love with this type of Caucasian work which has become "extremely rare" in such good conditions.
Small medallions, 24, present stylized birds and ethnic signs.
Certainly the wear is present but such an artefact can be considered in very good condition, given the view of the past years
Dimensions: width: 100 cm (39") x 150 cm (59") long This Soumak has been professionally cleaned and in an ecological way.

Azerbaijan is a former Soviet republic that stretches from the Caspian Sea to the Caucasus mountain ranges crossing Asia and Europe.
Its capital, Baku, is famous for its medieval intramural city and its fortifications.
The city walls are home to the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, also known as the Palace of the Shirvanshahs, a royal residence dating from the 15th century, and the Maiden Tower or Maiden's Tower, which dominates the city.
