Henry Schouten humorously depicts a cheerful scene of monkeying around a circus ring, as a couple of monkeys play with ice balls thrown at their heads.

Attractive oil on canvas signed lower right by Henry Schouten circa 1890.

Biography:

Henry Schouten was born in Indonesia in 1857 and died in Brussels in 1927.

Belgian painter, known as an animal painter and landscape artist.
He also used the pseudonym, Joseph Klaas.

He studied at the Brussels Academy (1876-1881), where he was strongly influenced by the animal painter Alfred Verwee. He is above all a smooth and realistic animal painter.
During his career, he will use various names of artists: Jos Klaus, M. CLaes, Joseph Klaas, E. Meulat Joors, V. Marinus, and J. Remis.
