Object description :

"Portrait Of Officer, Commander Of Artillery Under The Empire, Hst By Jb Germain In 1814"
French School early 19th century, portrait of a senior officer, veteran of the Empire, officer of the Legion of Honor and Knight of the Order of Saint Louis. It is presented in its original frame in gilded wood with palmettes from the Empire period. Our senior officer wearing a dark blue almost black uniform with scarlet piped breastplate of the same color as well as the collar, with golden buttons to the crossed guns of an artillery commander, is represented on the battlefield with in the background artillerymen firing cannons . The oil on canvas painting is signed by Germain and dated 1814. Jean Baptiste Germain (1782-1842) was a portrait painter active in Reims at the beginning of the 19th century. He painted the good Reimoise society, throughout his career and was a pupil of Bonnette and Peguchet, teachers in the city of Reims, he then followed the courses of Mr. Clermont, a former teacher in the drawing school of Reims, then of Jean Baptiste Regnault in Paris who completed his training. The painting is very well done, it is the work of a good portrait painter. The officer looks great, the representation of his weapon in the background is unusual. Painted under the Empire, the portrait was modified under the Restoration when our officer received the cross of Saint Louis which was added at that time (common use). Very good condition, painting cleaned with old restorations (re-lined). Beautiful frame gilded with gold leaf, also cleaned. Frame: 62cm x 73.5cm Canvas: 50cm x 61cm
