"Henry Durlacher / Sj Phillips London 19th Century Victorian Lined Trunk For Silveware & Antiques"
Victorian chest intended for the protection and transport of silverware and antiques, slightly domed in the upper part, made of oak with several metal reinforcements and inside lined covered with black fabric.

This trunk / coffer that belonged to Henry Durlacher / S J Phillips who are among the greatest English antique dealers of the 19th century. According to the information gathered, the address of 113 New Bond Street in London was shared by the two antique dealers between 1873 and 1878, so the chest can be dated to this period.

Overall good condition, some very light traces of rust on steel parts (please see photos), some light traces of use at the bottom in the trunk on the black lined but no cuts or scratches.
Traces of two wax seal on each side of the lock.
The lock is working and there is two keys, one original and one more recent. 

H Durlacher and S J Phillips are two of the greatest names in the history of antiques trade. Henry Durlacher built a clientele that included such significant collectors as Sir Richard Wallace, J. Pierpont Morgan and many museums.

Henry Durlacher (1826- )founded the Durlacher Brothers firm of art dealers in London in 1843, and was later joined by his brother George.
Henry Durlacher was an antique dealer recorded to have leased 113 New Bond Street in 1857 for a period of 21 years.
Subsequently, the Durlacher company developed with its new branch in New York from the 1920s and quickly became a major player in the Art market.

S J Phillips (1842-1908) opened a first shop in c.1869, and by then was also selling antique and silver; the business moved to 113 Bond Street in about 1873. Nowadays S J Phillips is one of the most important antique jewels and silverware dealer of the world.
The silver expert Arthur Grimwade (1913- 2002), a former director of the silver department at Christie’s from 1954 to 1979, described S.J. Phillips as
‘the greatest treasure house of acquirable possessions for limitless pockets of the world.’ Indeed, many of the world’s most important pieces of antique silver and jewellery have passed through the hands of the firm, whose customers have included major collectors such as Sir William Burrell (1861-1958), William Randolph Hearst (1863-1951), the leading silver collector Sir Arthur Gilbert (1913-2001), and members of the Royal family.
