Regency period fan. Frame in natural material engraved and sculpted with gallant scenes, little cupids and shells enhanced with gold and Martin varnish. Hand-painted parchment sheet depicting a scene from the Old Testament: Ruth and Boaz. This story relates the meeting between Ruth and Boaz while she is gleaning in the fields of the latter who will fall in love with her, marry her and have with her a son, Obed. Obed will in turn have a son, Jesse, who will himself be the father of King David. As the latter's great-grandmother, Ruth is considered an ancestor of Jesus Christ. The back represents an allegory of maritime trade.
