Object description :

"Pair Of Salon Tables Transition Period Stamped R.v.l.c 18th Century Circa 1760-1770."
Pair of Transition period coffee tables stamped RVLC circa 1760-1770. Two coffee tables in the model forming a pair, inlaid with turbinated rosettes and garlands of flowers, in satin veneer, kingwood, lemon tree and tobacco-stained sycamore, all underlined and with compound fillets, tinted green, natural boxwood and black fillets. They open on the front with three drawers in three rows hidden behind a leaf. The base is made up of four arched legs joined by a kidney-shaped crotch shelf. The door and the shelf are inlaid with turbinate rosettes characteristic of Lacroix's work. The whole is topped with a sheet of slightly veined white Carrara marble. Beautiful chiseled and gilded bronze ornamentation such as openwork galleries, clogs, draw lenses, rosettes and key heads. Both stamped R.VL.C for Roger Van der Cruse dit Lacroix and stamped with the JME Paris guild. One of them jointly bears the stamp of Genty as a merchant-mercer. Dimensions: Height 76.5cm - Width 48cm (47.6cm for the other) - Depth 37cm. Roger Van der Cruse dit Lacroix, Master in 1755 among the cabinetmakers of great talent who most marked the Transition period, occupies one of the first ranks. Of Flemish origin, he was born in Paris in 1728, in the Faubourg Saint-Antoine and took over his father's workshop in 1755. It was with small tables that Roger Van der Cruse asserted his personality at the same time as his predilection for light marquetry and the use of lemon tree, thus emphasizing the natural contrast of light wood with ebony, amaranth or green-tinted fruitwood. Oval or round, these small living room tables are generally fitted with drawers that may or may not form a writing desk. The vast majority of them are distinguished by a decor very characteristic of the cabinetmaker: a leafy rosette with five branches, which seems to pivot on itself and which appears in the marquetry of this table, in the center of the top and the crotch shelf. The pair of tables that we offer is a perfect example. Roger Van der Cruse uses two different stamps, "LACROIX" and the initials "RVLC". We sometimes find the two stamps juxtaposed on the same piece of furniture. More discreet, the second was probably intended for the furniture he supplied to the haberdashers, like one of our tables, the stamp of Lacroix was reserved for private clients. Denis Genty, received master on March 13, 1754, is a cabinetmaker and merchant, he enjoys a great reputation with a wealthy clientele including the Marquise de Houchin, the Countess of the Hospital, the Marquis de Nesle, that of Chambonnas ... More of its own production, it also sells the works of other great masters including RVLC, Dautriche, Macret or Hedouin among others. Despite this, poor management led to his bankruptcy, he filed for bankruptcy in 1762. Bibliography: J. Nicolay, The art and manner of French master cabinetmakers in the 18th century. P. Kjellberg, Le Mobilier français du XVIIIe. C. Roinet, Roger Vandercruse called La Croix.
