Beautiful armchair with flat back in molded and carved natural wood decorated with flowers.

Pierre Nogaret (1718 - August 23, 1771)

Seat carpenter. Master in 1745 in Lyon.
Lyon's most famous carpenter.
These works, almost all in carved and varnished walnut, decorated with flowers and rockeries or with ribbons and moldings of linked rushes, bear the stamp "NOGARET A LYON" with the leg of the 'Y' which folds down to the left.
The lines of his creations, thus emphasizing the movement of the silhouette, give them an alert rhythm like no other.
Pierre Nogaret was born in Paris in 1718 and will remain the undisputed master of the Lyon seat under the reign of Louis XV. Unlike his colleagues Riesener or Jacob, we have no portrait of this illustrious cabinetmaker, who will therefore be the "faceless" craftsman, remaining a real myth identified solely with his production.
However, it is thought that after an apprenticeship in Paris, probably with a great master, he left the capital in 1743 to settle in Lyon where he continued his training with the Lyon master François Girard. He obtained his letters of mastery in Lyon in 1745. From 1745 to 1761. He seems not to have invested much in the life of his corporation of which he was elected master-guard with Mathieu Lerbet only on February 9, 1771.
He died on August 23 of the same year and will be buried in the "cellar of Saint-Roch".
His stamp The stamp of Nogaret is presented as a line of small capitals (47mm x 2.2mm) and the shape of the Y of Lyon presents a very characteristic arrangement, such as the leg folds over to the left at the horizontal.
The false stamps were modeled on reference works such as that of the Comte de Salverte, that of Pierre Verlet (1955) or that of Jean Nicolay (1959), which to varying degrees present an obvious error on the "Y". The location of Nogaret's stamp seems to have been rigorously coded.
On seats with caned flat backs, the stamp is on the rear cross member of the chassis,
on padded flat back seats, it is on the rear cross member of the belt,
on convertibles, on the back upright at the level of the assembly,
on the gilded wooden seats with frames, on a crosspiece inside the frame of the belt.
