"Art Deco Terracotta Sculpture, Young Tanagra Woman, Joseph Armengol / Joseph Bernard 1930"
Old & rare terracotta sculpture by the Spanish artist Joseph Armengol. Subject depicting a young woman draped in the manner of the Tanagra. Work from the 1930s with bronze patina. 22.5cm in height. Very good condition Joseph Armengol 1891 – 1918. He is sometimes referred to as José Armengol y Vallver. He was a pupil of Francisc Gali, trained in Barcelona, and his production is strongly influenced by the delicacy of Catalan modernism, by the work of José Llimona and by the French sculptor Joseph Bernard. Some of his drawings are known, some small statues in lost wax terracotta and bronze, most of which are kept in the Museum of Contemporary Art of Catalonia. His premature death in 1918, when he was twenty-seven, interrupted his promising career.
