Good proof bearing on the back a collection mark in brown ink Lugt: 129a: " A. HERLIN? (1815-1900), genre painter, Lille. Drawings. This signature, taken from drawings of the 17th and 18th centuries, is attributed by some to the painter Auguste Herlin, from Lille, who was curator of the section of paintings from the Musée Wicar in 1879, honorary curator in 1892 and on whom a biographical note by L. Quarré-Reybourbon appeared in Réunion des Sociétés des Beaux-Arts des Départements, 1906, pp. 320-333 However, the initials reproduced are different of the one, from the hand of Herlin, which appears on letters or drawings kept in his family: his paintings are also signed differently."
