"Important Quality Portrait Representing The Poet D. Stannus. 19th Century English School"
This elegant portrait is the very representation of worldly painting. Here the painter J.Mackie presents the poet Dean Stannus. The hand work and details are very precise and bring a lot of life to this Victorian setting. The re-gilded frame is also of quality and supports this fine set The Very Reverend Dean Stannus (1788-1876) acted as agent for the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Marquesses from 1817, and was an extremely powerful figure. He lived in the Marquess' house on Castle Street. In the early 19th century he replaced the 'ugly' white wall with overhanging trees that darkened Castle Street and had wrought iron railings put in place in their place.
