Pair Of Very Important Candelabras With Thirteen Lights 1783

 

Description:
Chiseled and gilded bronze, sea green marble.

These lights consist of a column base bearing the statue of a dancer and a bacchanalian dancer, they support a cornucopia from which spring the thirteen arms of light. The square bronze base, placed on a marble slab supporting the marble shaft of the column, is surrounded by a garland of fruit, beaded friezes and a large fluted ring.
We therefore have two statues, dressed in a light drape, the two dancers wear a tambourine at the waist, at the feet of the dancer we will notice a pan flute, a vase, the man is leaning on a tree trunk.
The quality of their “drawing” is very present in their movement and in every detail. The sconces are in two superimposed rows and entirely covered with swirling grooves.
On the base is stamped "BY JP CAUVET. SCULPTOR OF MR. FRERE DU ROY 1783". A pair of similar candelabra made by this sculptor but smaller are in the Louvre (photo).
For the two pairs of candelabras, from the Louvre and ours, the column is practically the same, that of the Louvre being in granite. Jean Pierre Cauvet, was one of the bronziers and sculptors of the second half of the 18th century.
These exceptional lights are in a very pure Louis XVI style, with sober proportions but elegant and lively statuary; here is the beauty without ostentation specific to the Old Regime. In the same spirit, it should be noted that the end of the Louis XVI style, anticipating in some nuances the Directoire Style, becomes more sober without losing "strength", which is perfectly noticeable in the design of these lights.
