The sculptor Michelangelo (1475 - 1564) and Laurent de Medici, Duke of Urbino - known as the Magnificent - are undoubtedly the ideal duo linking a sponsor to a great artist. Their relationship, however, went far beyond this single report since the sculptor was almost considered a member of the Medici family; he lived in the very heart of the Medici-Riccardi palace between 1490 and 1492. In contact with the ancient collections of the family and the artistic and intellectual emulation that surround him daily, Michel Ange will become the sculptor that we know and will never forget the help of his Magnificent protector. Dressed like a Roman warlord, Lorenzo de Medici does not adopt a belligerent or triumphant posture but rather pensive and almost intimate. The posture is not official, the character is captured deep in thought, seated away from the noise and bustle of the world.
The casket on which he is leaning contains the experiences accumulated throughout a lifetime, much more precious than all material wealth. The bat that adorns the object embodies melancholy, that of the past, that of regret for the joys of life or that of missed moments. From the top of his tomb, in the calm of the basilica, the Magnificent observes for eternity life going on and remembers his own, inviting the spectator to show the same humility as him: tempus fugit. An example of moderation and restraint appreciated by the bourgeoisie of the 19th century. Our proof with brown patina, dated from this same century, is in perfect condition.
