Object description :

"China Ruyi Scepter Qing Dynasty."
Qing dynasty Ruyi scepter. China Qing Dynasty, large wooden Ruyi scepter with metal and mother-of-pearl inlay and three carved white jade inserts. Traditionally arched and tapered in shape, consisting of a lingzhi*-shaped head, an oblong lobed panel at the center and an oval lobed panel at the base, each capped with a jade plaque carved with auspicious motifs such as; bats, birds, foliage, and fruit on undulating stems. The shaft and the three bases are decorated on all sides with a winding of mother-of-pearl floral inlay joined by gilded copper branches. Our ruyi is presented arranged on three distinct quilted layers and a carved and openwork wooden terrace covered with fabrics. The whole is topped by a glass cage with wooden frames. The reception box with sliding opening and double copper handle is marked with sinograms inviting welcome. *Lingzhi is a mushroom of immortality which symbolizes longevity and happiness, not only because the Chinese attribute to it the benefits of resistance to harsh life, but also because it is very rare. Ruyi in Chinese means “may your wishes come true”. Dimension: the scepter length 52.9cm - width 14.2cm. the glass cage length 61.2cm - width 19.2cm - height 17.6cm. the terrace length 61.8cm – width 19.8cm – width 19.8cm – height 6.8cm. and finally box length 64.8cm – width 31.6cm – height 26.7cm. It should be noted an old restoration on the median jade, visible in the photographs.
