François-Auguste Ravier (1814 -1895). French painter of the 19th century He frequented the studio of Théodore Caruelle d'Aligny and befriended Jean-Baptiste Camille Corot, then Charles-François Daubigny. He settled in Crémieu in 1850, then in Morestel in 1868, seduced by the luminosity of the landscapes Admirer of Turner, François-Auguste Ravier worked color in a thick material, to the point of obsession, never neglecting the lines that were always visible under the pigment, favoring shadows and lights. In this, he can be considered as one of the precursors of Impressionism. it is now present in many French and international museums: Orsay, Brest, Bagnols sur Seze, Reims, Grenoble, Lyon, Toulon, Aix les Bains, Cherbourg, Morestel, Villefranche-sur-saône, Cambridge (GB), Washington (USA)...
Félix Thiollier (1842-1914), Saint-Etienne scholar, historian and archaeologist, artist photographer, collector and publisher. In his residence at the Commanderie de Verrières, in the commune of Saint-Germain-Laval, he received his friends such as: Charles Joseph Beauverie (1839-1923), Léon-Pierre Ducaruge (1843-1911), Auguste Ravier (1814-1895) , Emile Noirot (1853-1924). He is also the author of many books on these artists including Auguste Ravier Painter in 1899.
