Big brass and copper reliquary, 16th century
This reliquary stands on a poly-lobed base with two square longitudinal wings. The base is chased with vegetal patterns, with two of the lobes depicting one a lamb crownd by a cruciferous halo, and the other a dove. The others are decorated with a flower.. A big gadroon umbilicus supports an hexagonal cross-section stem, ornamented with a ring at each end, and a big central knot adorned with seven cherub heads on the edge. This knot shows again in little strips the same vegetal patterns as on the lobes. Above the stem, the flared part shows the same gadroon patern as on the umbilicus. On each side, a vegetal garland holds a big pendeloque fruit.
The upper part sits on a mandorla-shaped plane, four rods going into the same number of cylinders to keep it steady. The openable part is round and narrowed in a concave move. Four little reliefs with putti heads are set near the opening. The top is a large dome chased with alternating stripes, empty and ornamented with shells. A big gothic wreath in relief, with intricate openwork pattern topped by pinnacles, coats rim of dome. On each side, two little rings decorated with dolphins seem made to hold candles. The whole is topped by a crucifix set on an alternating of rings and knots. Ends of cross are sphere-shaped, and it shows on one face a Madonna and Child, and on the other, Christ wearing perizonium with two flaps fluttering on each side, and a large titulus.
This reliquary seems to be a reassembly of several parts of different origins. The gothic wreath, for instance, is not attached to the dome. The lower part is very likely a bit more ancient with its chased decoration, typical of 15th century, while style of crucifix, little dolphins patterns, pendeloque fruits, as well as the choice of a dome, clearly indicates 16th century. This kind of reliquary was usually meant to display a relic kept in a cylindrical glass, but the presence of rods that hold the upper part rather suggests that this one was kept closed with its relic inside.
Very good condition, very stable, remains of silvering and gilding. Some tiny bumps and distortions. Two ancient repairs on gothic wreath, where a pinnacle is missing.
Height : 44,5cm
