Tous deux entament alors un voyage au long-cour, d\u00e9cisif pour l\u2019histoire du mus\u00e9e, qui va les conduire au Japon, en Chine, en Asie du Sud-Est, puis en Inde avant de retrouver l\u2019Europe. Lors des diff\u00e9rentes \u00e9tapes, Guimet se renseigne aupr\u00e8s des \u00e9rudits dans le cadre de son enqu\u00eate sur les religions d\u2019Extr\u00eame-Orient. Le mus\u00e9e, en effet, na\u00eetra de ce voyage, d\u2019abord \u00e0 Lyon puis \u00e0 Paris. Dans sa recherche d\u2019exhaustivit\u00e9 et dans sa volont\u00e9 de comprendre les religions, l\u2019\u00e9rudit \u00c9mile Guimet rapporte un extraordinaire Panth\u00e9on bouddhique. Insatiable collectionneur, il est l\u2019une des plus \u00e9tonnantes figures de son temps, qui marqua profond\u00e9ment l\u2019histoire du go\u00fbt pour les arts asiatiques en France. Il y retrouve son ami F\u00e9lix R\u00e9gamey (1844-1907), l\u2019illustrateur et caricaturiste. Ils entreprennent un voyage en Asie (Japon, Chine, Singapour, Ceylan (Sri Lanka), Inde) puis regagnent l\u2019Europe en bateau, par le canal de Suez inaugur\u00e9 en 1869.<br \/>\nAu gr\u00e9 de ce voyage, comme lors de ceux faits en \u00c9gypte, Guimet recueille sculptures, peintures et objets, manuscrits et livres destin\u00e9s \u00e0 l\u2019\u0152uvre de sa vie : dresser un tableau compar\u00e9 des religions. Ce but s\u2019incarne dans le mus\u00e9e de la place d\u2019I\u00e9na (1889), entreprise intellectuelle unique dans le paysage des mus\u00e9es du monde. Incompris d\u00e8s les ann\u00e9es 1930, le mus\u00e9e rend hommage, 140 ans apr\u00e8s le voyage d\u2019Asie, \u00e0 son fondateur et \u00e0 son \u00ab usine \u00e0 id\u00e9es \u00bb. Partir, c\u2019est un peu fuir ses responsabilit\u00e9s, c\u2019est aussi oublier les deuils qui l\u2019accablent.<br \/>\nCe go\u00fbt d\u2019ailleurs est moins une qu\u00eate d\u2019exotisme qu\u2019un souci de comprendre l\u2019autre et de le faire conna\u00eetre. Ainsi Guimet consigne ses souvenirs dans des carnets de voyage qu\u2019il publie \u00e0 son retour. En un temps o\u00f9 ces r\u00e9cits abondent et t\u00e9moignent, bien souvent, du regard condescendant que les riches Europ\u00e9ens accordent aux contr\u00e9es lointaines qu\u2019ils parcourent, les textes de Guimet refl\u00e8tent autant la curiosit\u00e9 de leur auteur que son humour et son anticonformisme. Le pays, min\u00e9 par des guerres et de r\u00e9voltes, leur appara\u00eet d\u00e9sesp\u00e9r\u00e9ment pauvre, sale et sombre et ils n\u2019ont gu\u00e8re de temps pour tenter malgr\u00e9 tout de comprendre le pays et d\u00e9passer cette vision n\u00e9gative. Les interpr\u00e8tes manquent ; \u00c9mile Guimet\u00a0se heurte \u00e0 la suspicion ou l\u2019incompr\u00e9hension des religieux qu\u2019il essaie d\u2019interroger sur leurs doctrines, F\u00e9lix R\u00e9gamey \u00e0 l\u2019hostilit\u00e9 de la foule lorsqu\u2019il entreprend de dessiner dans la rue. Pourtant, \u00c9mile Guimet ne semble pas trop d\u00e9\u00e7u par l\u2019impossibilit\u00e9 de mener son enqu\u00eate, estimant que les religions chinoises sont d\u00e9j\u00e0 bien \u00e9tudi\u00e9es.<br \/>\nIls visitent des temples et des hospices, une \u00e9glise chr\u00e9tienne et une mosqu\u00e9e \u00e0 Canton, assistent \u00e0 des c\u00e9r\u00e9monies religieuses ou civiles, qu\u2019\u00c9mile Guimet relate par la suite dans des articles de presse illustr\u00e9s de gravures de R\u00e9gamey. Pour autant, ces personnages inspirent \u00e0 F\u00e9lix R\u00e9gamey une toile d\u2019une puissante expressivit\u00e9.<br \/>\nIls traversent ensuite le d\u00e9troit pour remonter la c\u00f4te de Coromandel jusqu\u2019\u00e0 Madras. En chemin, la visite de temples am\u00e8ne \u00c9mile Guimet \u00e0 s\u2019interroger sur les influences suppos\u00e9es de la Gr\u00e8ce et de l\u2019\u00c9gypte sur les arts d\u2019Asie et l\u2019\u00e9tat de la recherche arch\u00e9ologique comparative.<br \/>\nCette partie du p\u00e9riple nous est connue gr\u00e2ce \u00e0 une s\u00e9rie d\u2019articles d\u2019\u00c9mile Guimet illustr\u00e9s par R\u00e9gamey, compl\u00e9t\u00e9e dans les collections du mus\u00e9e par des acquisitions d\u2019ouvrages et de statuaire.<br \/>\nLe retour en France, via le canal de Suez, en mars 1877, cl\u00f4t ce voyage de dix mois.<\/p>\n<p>L\u2019EXPOSITION UNIVERSELLE DE 1878<\/p>\n<p>De retour en France en mars 1877, F\u00e9lix R\u00e9gamey et \u00c9mile Guimet ont fort \u00e0 faire pour organiser le bilan de leur fructueuse mission. Tandis que le peintre s\u2019active dans son atelier parisien \u00e0 transformer les dessins esquiss\u00e9s sur le vif en grandes toiles didactiques destin\u00e9es aux futures salles du mus\u00e9e, le philanthrope r\u00e9dige un long rapport au ministre de l\u2019Instruction<br \/>\npublique et des Beaux-Arts, publi\u00e9 le 15 avril 1877. Il y annonce officiellement son d\u00e9sir de doter Lyon d\u2019un grand \u00ab mus\u00e9e religieux qui contiendra tous les dieux de l\u2019Inde, de la Chine, du Japon et de l\u2019\u00c9gypte \u00bb.<br \/>\nPuis \u00c9mile Guimet s\u2019attelle \u00e0 la publication d\u2019ouvrages relatant ses voyages dont Promenades japonaises (1878) avec R\u00e9gamey.<br \/>\nLe 1er mai 1878, on inaugure \u00e0 Paris l\u2019Exposition universelle qui voit la cons\u00e9cration du tout nouveau Palais du Trocad\u00e9ro, sur la colline de Chaillot. Dans la section consacr\u00e9e \u00e0 la \u00ab Galerie de l\u2019Art r\u00e9trospectif \u00bb, \u00c9mile Guimet pr\u00e9sente les toiles de R\u00e9gamey avec une s\u00e9lection d\u2019\u0153uvres asiatiques, essentiellement japonaises. Leur ordonnancement pr\u00e9figure son mus\u00e9e des Religions.<\/p>\n<p>LE MUSEE DES RELIGIONS<\/p>\n<p>Le 30 septembre 1879, Jules Ferry, alors ministre de l\u2019Instruction publique et des Beaux-Arts, inaugure, \u00e0 Lyon, le mus\u00e9e d\u2019\u00c9mile Guimet encore en construction. Sa vaste rotonde inscrite \u00e0 l\u2019angle de deux rues est visible de loin : elle abritera le hall d\u2019entr\u00e9e, au rez-de-chauss\u00e9e, et la biblioth\u00e8que \u00e0 l\u2019\u00e9tage. Trois niveaux de galeries sont pr\u00e9vus pour accueillir la c\u00e9ramique<br \/>\nchinoise et japonaise, la statuaire bouddhique japonaise et l\u2019art \u00e9gyptien.<br \/>\nMais le projet peine \u00e0 soulever l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat de la ville. Ainsi, d\u00e8s 1882, des \u00e9changes avec l\u2019\u00c9tat et la Ville de Paris le conduisent \u00e0 transf\u00e9rer son mus\u00e9e dans la capitale. La ville offre le terrain, choisi dans un quartier r\u00e9guli\u00e8rement associ\u00e9 aux Expositions universelles, tandis que l\u2019\u00c9tat et \u00c9mile Guimet se partagent les frais de la construction du b\u00e2timent dont l\u2019architecture et le<br \/>\nd\u00e9cor respectent fid\u00e8lement le projet d\u2019origine.<br \/>\nTandis qu\u2019\u00e0 Lyon \u00c9mile Guimet peine \u00e0 vendre l\u2019\u00e9difice qui avait h\u00e9berg\u00e9 son premier mus\u00e9e \u2013 il deviendra une patinoire en 1897 \u2013, son institution conna\u00eet, \u00e0 Paris, l\u2019essor dont il avait r\u00eav\u00e9 : \u00ab un mus\u00e9e qui pense, un mus\u00e9e qui parle, un mus\u00e9e qui vit \u00bb.<\/p>\n<p>DES COLLECTIONS D\u2019UNE GRANDE RICHESSE<\/p>\n<p>Dans la rotonde d\u2019entr\u00e9e du mus\u00e9e, le visiteur \u00e9tait accueilli par le buste d\u2019Antino\u00fcs en Osiris t\u00e9moignant autant de l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat d\u2019\u00c9mile Guimet pour l\u2019Antiquit\u00e9 classique que de sa passion pour les cultes isiaques.<br \/>\nAu rez-de-chauss\u00e9e se d\u00e9ployaient ses collections de c\u00e9ramique japonaise (c\u00f4t\u00e9 Boissi\u00e8re) et chinoise (c\u00f4t\u00e9 I\u00e9na), tandis que les \u00e9tages \u00e9taient consacr\u00e9s \u00e0 la statuaire religieuse des pays d\u2019Asie.<br \/>\nDans cet espace sont r\u00e9unies des \u0153uvres qu\u2019\u00c9mile Guimet acquit au cours de son p\u00e9riple en Asie et, apr\u00e8s son retour en France, aupr\u00e8s des grands marchands parisiens de l\u2019\u00e9poque. Leur pr\u00e9sentation s\u2019inspire des galeries inaugur\u00e9es en ces lieux en 1889 qui se caract\u00e9risaient, conform\u00e9ment \u00e0 la mode de l\u2019\u00e9poque, par une forte densit\u00e9. C\u2019est le regroupement d\u2019iconographies<br \/>\nvari\u00e9es mais participant d\u2019un m\u00eame contexte religieux qui pr\u00e9sida \u00e0 ces ensembles au sein desquels figurent des pi\u00e8ces d\u2019un int\u00e9r\u00eat documentaire et de grands chefs-d\u2019\u0153uvre. Beaucoup n\u2019ont pas \u00e9t\u00e9 expos\u00e9es au public depuis la modification des salles dans les ann\u00e9es 1920.<\/p>\n<p>LE MANDALA DU TOJI<\/p>\n<p>En octobre 1876, lors d\u2019une visite au temple Toji de Kyoto, \u00c9mile Guimet est frapp\u00e9 par un ensemble de statues dont l\u2019organisation, sous forme d\u2019un mandala (un \u00ab ensemble complet \u00bb rigoureusement orient\u00e9), offre \u00e0 ses yeux une explication claire de la doctrine de la secte bouddhique japonaise Shingon.<br \/>\nConvaincu de l\u2019int\u00e9r\u00eat didactique de cet ensemble et de la place centrale qu\u2019il pourrait occuper dans son mus\u00e9e, Guimet en commande aussit\u00f4t une \u00ab copie \u00bb. L\u2019abb\u00e9 du Toji confie cette mission \u00e0 Yamamoto Yosuke, sculpteur de Masuyacho, qui r\u00e9alise le projet conform\u00e9ment aux quelques modifications apport\u00e9es par le sup\u00e9rieur du monast\u00e8re. Au centre appara\u00eet le Bouddha Vairocana (Dainichi Nyorai), entour\u00e9 de quatre autres bouddhas figurant ses vertus fondamentales et les \u00e9tapes de l\u2019\u00c9veil, eux-m\u00eames assist\u00e9s de bodhisattva. \u00c0 droite, un groupe de bodhisattva figure la diffusion de la Loi bouddhique par la pr\u00e9dication, tandis qu\u2019\u00e0 gauche, les divinit\u00e9s farouches luttent contre les puissances hostiles \u00e0 l\u2019\u00c9veil. Aux angles, apparaissent six divinit\u00e9s gardiennes prot\u00e9geant les quatre orients.<\/p>\n<p>VUES DE LOIN<\/p>\n<p><strong>Les films de l\u2019exposition<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Bien qu\u2019\u00c9mile Guimet n\u2019ait connu que les pr\u00e9mices du cin\u00e9ma, les premiers documentaires semblent nous restituer son regard. En suivant son itin\u00e9raire \u00e0 travers le continent, les images anim\u00e9es d\u00e9voilent une certaine id\u00e9e de l\u2019Asie, entre int\u00e9r\u00eat ethnographique et curiosit\u00e9 religieuse.<br \/>\nComme F\u00e9lix R\u00e9gamey, les op\u00e9rateurs envoy\u00e9s par Kahn, Lumi\u00e8re et Path\u00e9 croquent sur le vif ce qui les entoure.
