Auguste Couder was born in London on 1 st April 1789. He was the son of Jean-Baptiste Couder, colonist in Santo Domingo. History painter student of Jean-Baptiste Regnault and Jacques-Louis David at the School of Fine Arts in Paris, Auguste Couder exhibited for the first time at the Salon of 1814 with "The Death of General Moreau" (now at the Museum of Fine Arts, Brest ). He was elected a member of the Academy of Fine Arts in 1839, and promoted to the rank of Officer of the Legion of Honor in 1841. In 1831 he appeared on the list of professors at the École Polytechnique. Auguste Couder died on July 21, 1873 in Paris. His works are kept by many different museums in France including Le Louvre in Paris and the Musée d'Histoire de France in Versailles.
